The “Pet” Turkey ~ Troublesome Turkeys Contest Entry

Submitted by Renie B.
I am a city girl, growing up just outside of Boston, MA. This happened a long time ago when we lived in the city. I was about 5 years old and Thanksgiving was coming. I am not sure who got a turkey from his work but it was either my uncle or my dad, in the late 1940’s. We were having Thanksgiving together with both families at our home. The turkey was nice looking with only one problem it was still alive. The men were giving the job of taking care of the turkey. Us kids were so excited to have a real live turkey and we wanted to keep it alive. That wasn’t to be. We cried and begged and were told to go out and play. We thought of taking the turkey from the cellar and hiding it but we were too late our dads were done in the cellar debating the best way to do this. Neither wanted to be the one to use the hatchet. Now both of them were drinkers at the time. So the discussed and would have a drink to calm them down. They would talk a little more then decided the needed another drink. This went on for some time when finally one of them had the courage to do the deed with the other trying to hold the poor turkey. The first swing missed. Then of course they needed another drink to do it again. I think the holder of the bird was leery of the axe. Finally after several time the job was done. And the turkey was handed over to my aunt and mother. The next day us kids sat at our little table for Thanksgiving and we all refused to eat our pet turkey. We would sit there and look at the murders with a frown. We did eat the stuffing and I think we eventually ate some of the turkey leftovers. That is memory that will stick with me the rest of my life as I had my first taste of what farm life was like.
