Teaching “d” and “b” differentiation

homeschoolingwednesday Teaching d and b differentiation

One of the things that practically all children struggle with when they’re learning to read is to differentiate between lowercase “d” and “b”. There are some tricks that have been around for a while, such as having the child think of the word bed to help them remember which way each letter goes, but that method didn’t seem to work with my daughter. So I came up with another strategy.

I decided to draw an illustration of each letter along with an animal that starts with that sound — a dog on the “d” and a bee on the “b”. Having this pictorial representation of each letter has really helped my daughter with her “d” and “b” recognition.

  1. Wow, you are SO TALENTED!!! I can’t even draw a good circle. Thanks for these fun downloads! I can think of at least two boys around here that could use them!

I posted about homeschooling stuff too…since there’s no Mr. Linky today, I’ll just share my link here if you’d like to read it!

Thanks for working so hard on your site. My hubby peeked over at it tonight and said, “Wow, they really have a good site!” Just thought I’d tell you that!! :)

  2. Thank you so much! This is great.

  3. Those are cute printouts! Another strategy I use it to teach the word bed which looks like a bed if done correctly.

  4. Too cute! I’m sending these to a friend of mine that has one that might need this! :D

  5. Awesome, thanks!

  6. Thank you! This is awesome :)

  7. Great idea with the illustrations. One trick I tried that worked with one of my daughters was to remind her that “d” is after “c” in the alphabet - she could remember by making a c and then adding a line in the opening. Hard to explain here, but easy to show on paper and remember.

  8. thank you for these! my son is currently having problems with seeing the differences among 6, 9, p and q. any chance you’ll design artwork for those?? ;)

  9. You are so talented. My son is in the first grade and he still has a hard time sometimes differentiating between the letters “b” and “d”. I am definitely going to print these off and show them to him. Have you ever thought about designing artwork for all of the letters? This is a downloadable I would pay for.

  10. This is a form of inbeded phonics and we use it during language therapy with my dysexic daughter. It is very helpful.

  11. VERY cute! My 2nd grader still has to think about this and the kindergartner definitely does.

  12. So funny! Just a week ago I drew the letter “d” on my whiteboard and made a dog out of it, trying to get my 5 yr old to understand this. Your’s are much cuter though! I’ve just printed them and will be putting them up in our school room. Thank you so much!

  13. Fantastic! This is the only thing my 7-year-old struggles with. I am downloading these right now!!

  14. THANK YOU! So very much for coming up with this. Both of my kids still struggle with this!! What a brilliant idea!!

  15. Loved this…. printing. A VERY clever way to learn.

I’m here by way of the Carnival of Homeschooling. So nice to meet you.

    Have a great weekend!

  16. I love this! My son’s Kindergarten teacher used bed to differentiate since the word looks like the object. Using the Bee to illustrate b though is AWESOME! I’m so printing these out!
