Taking Old Memories And Making Them New

facetime with the kids Taking Old Memories And Making Them New

Welcome to the last week of our August End 08 Great challenge, Face Time With The Kids. I have really enjoyed this challenge, and have found much encouragement from reading what others have been doing throughout the month also. I hope you feel the same. It is so easy to get caught up in all the daily activities of life. I’ve found this extra nudge to enjoy some quality time with my children very helpful in shifting my priorities.

For this last week, I will be focusing on sharing and reenacting some of my favorite childhood memories with my own children. I know they always love to hear stories about when mom was little, so this should make a great springboard for quality time. And for myself, getting to experience some of my old favorites with the fresh perspective of my kids will be such a treat.

I know that the participants in this challenge have children of all ages. I think this is an idea that can really be expanded to include all of our kids, from the youngest to the oldest.

With my youngest, I will be taking lots of pictures of her this week. I always loved flipping through my baby album when I was younger, so I’m going to make sure she will get the same opportunity someday. I am also going to try to finish her onesie keepsake pillow this week. If she is anything like her older sisters and brother, this will become a favorite to cuddle and sleep with every night, much like the blankie I had as a child. She will also be included in our other activities, although I’m sure she will not get as much out of it as the older kids.

We will all watch some of my favorite movies from childhood: The Sound of Music, Annie, Heidi, and The Muppets Take Manhattan. We will also read some of my favorite books from childhood. I’m even considering starting a once a month book club for Isabelle (my 9 year old) and I where we’ll rotate between her book choices and my old favorites.

There are four snacks in particular that really stand out as my childhood favorites, so we will be making those together this week as well. On the list are: peanut butter rolled into balls in brown sugar, toast with peanut butter and strawberry cream cheese, Chex mix (made with just pretzels and Chex like my dad used to make), and 7-Up and orange juice mixed together and served with a big bowl of oven-popped popcorn. I plan on sharing some of my memories that these foods evoke as we make and eat them together.

So what about you? What are you plans for some extra face time with your kids this week? Please post on your blog and/or leave us a comment or email so that we can follow along and be inspired.

Sometime later this week we will be giving you a preview of the End 08 Great challenge for next month, so stay tuned!

  1. Another excellent idea. Thanks for the challenges.

  2. My time will be having my daughter help make cookies. She may be only two but she can pat the dough down or roll a ball of dough for ginger cookies!
Stop by my tackle which is similar to the mountain we climbed in Maine last week!

  4. Wow, this all sounds so amazing. I have been so convicted on various blogs today, that I really, really must spend more face time with each of my three boys. Thanks for the truly fantastic ideas!!!
