Spread the Love with Memes

Memes are a new blogger’s best friend. They are also very beneficial for more established bloggers.

So, just what is a meme?

A meme, sometimes called a blog carnival, is when a blogger hosts a themed-post on their blog at a predetermined time and invites others to participate. To participate, a blogger writes a post that relates to the chosen theme and then links up on the host’s blog, usually via a Mr. Linky. For example, here at Happy To Be At Home, we post the Scrumptious Sunday Swap. We share a recipe and ask other bloggers to link up with a recipe of their own. Blog hosts will usually have a link on their blogs to specific rules and guidelines for their meme.

What is the benefit of participating in a meme?

  1. A meme is a great way to find new bloggers with similar interests. It is a great way to make new friends across the blogosphere.
  2. Participating in a meme is a fantastic way to drive traffic to your site.
  3. Writing posts that correspond with memes throughout the week helps to keep your blog content fresh. Memes also provide inspiration for those times when you are not sure what to write about.

What are the rules of etiquette for meme participation?

  1. Make sure your post stays on topic with the original intent of the meme. If you are unsure, read through the host’s meme guidelines or look through their archives to see what they have posted for each meme post.
  2. Always include a link back to the meme host’s blog on your participating post.
  3. When linking your post to Mr. Linky, make sure you link directly to your meme post, not to your homepage. If you make a mistake, you can delete your own link from the Mr. Linky list by clicking on the smiley face next to your name.
  4. Visit the posts of fellow meme participants and leave a comment.
  5. If you host a Mr. Linky on your site, do not link that post to another Mr. Linky.
