School Supplies
The school year is fast approaching. For many of us that means frantically trying to get our act together before the year begins. Last week on my other blog I made a list of all the things I needed to do before the year started. Thanks to many encouraging bloggers, I have made my way through many of the items on my list.
After reading your links last week, I found a great idea from Laura. Every year they take a trip to the store to buy school supplies and then go out to lunch to celebrate. Inspired by her post, I decided to do the same thing! We loaded up the suburban and headed to Wendy’s and Walmart to pick up school supplies.
The kids had a great time picking out folders, scissors and glue, while I tried to navigate my way through a sea of other moms and kids doing the exact same thing. All and all they had a great time and didn’t seem to notice that half the population of Maryland had read Laura’s post and were making fun school memories too.
While shopping for school supplies I had a light bulb moment. Since we have many school aged kids at our house (5), things like glue, scissors, crayons, and markers seem to disappear. Usually each child pleads innocent and doesn’t have any idea what happened to these items. This year I am determined to teach my children some responsibility in this area. All of my younger children picked out pencil boxes during our trip. Then each child filled their box with school supplies. All the supplies were marked with the child’s initials. Now, when it is school time, they get their pencil box and use their own supplies. If they lose their supplies they will have to purchase more from the school store (that’s me). I am sure it will only take a few trips to the school store before they learn to take care of their supplies.
I hope this plan will help my little ones grow in this area of responsibility. For now they are just excited to have something that is their own!

If you would like to do your school supply shopping from the comfort of your own home though, we suggest EZ School Supplies. Here you can find over 26,000 brand name items that can be shipped directly to your door from over 32 distribution centers throughout the U.S. If you use this special Happy To Be At Home code, EZMB087, you can get 10% off of your order.
I would love to hear what you all are doing to gear up for the school year. If you aren’t ready to gear up, perhaps you are going strong, either way we would love to read about your homeschooling adventures.

Here’s what you need to do to participate in Homeschooling Wednesday:
1. Post a homeschool article on your own blog, and link back to this post.
2. Then come back here and add your name, the subject of your post, and the post URL to Mr. Linky (Note: Please make sure you link to your individual post, not your blog’s main/front page!)
3. If you don’t have a blog, but would still like to participate, just leave a comment here with your tip/list. Everyone’s ideas are appreciated.

I do the school supply thing every year. I set things up where they are responsible for their own things. It seems to work quite well. I even have gotten where they have different colored pencils to use for writing so if I find a pencil out somewhere where it shouldn’t be well I know whose it is. Also school supplies are to stay within the “school room” that way there is no chances of crayon coloring on the walls throughout the house.
