Reading Lists

homeschoolingwednesday Reading Lists

Summer is a great time to start making your child’s reading list for the next school year. For my older kids, I try to read or be familiar with every book I put on their list. My oldest is a fast reader so that doesn’t always happen. With my younger children, I try to use the classic children’s books with some popular newer series as well. Honey for a Child’s Heart is a great resource for finding good books for your child to read.

I once heard a speaker at a homeschool convention give this advice about kids and reading.

  • Have your kids read books by themselves that are at their reading level.
  • Read books to your children that are above their reading level.
  • Have your children read aloud books below their reading level.

This was some of the best advice I have ever heard regarding kids and reading. Some of my readers would get frustrated reading aloud books that were at their reading level. Choosing easier books helped them to build confidence while reading aloud. They actually began to enjoy reading aloud, and now volunteer to read to their siblings on a regular basis.

As a starting point I have posted the reading lists I used with my children last year. We didn’t read every book on the list, and we read many that were not on the list, but it is a good starting point. I have also included a reading check off sheet. This was helpful for me to keep track of the books my kids read throughout the school year. Feel free to use these lists as a guide to help you plan your upcoming year. Remember though, what works for my family, may not work for yours!

  1. What I need is a reading list of books that are NOT okay for high-schoolers. I’m reading ahead of her as fast as I can and can’t get to my own list.

    Great tips!

  2. I totally agree!! I do the reading advice with my kids and it works!!

Thanks for sharing the book lists! I am working at putting lists together for my kids for next year. I enjoy reading other’s lists because I know the books are “tried and true” and I get fresh ideas to use. Also my 7th grader is my bookworm and I am always trying to remember book titles that I read and find books to fit his fancy!

  3. [...] the past few weeks I have posted my homeschooling curriculum and reading lists. It’s fun to see what everyone else is using and find out what people like and dislike about [...]
