Keeping Home Education Simple

homeschoolingwednesday Keeping Home Education Simple

With the new colicy baby, I have had to keep our schedule very basic and bare-bones. It used to bother me that I did not include a gazillion other subjects into my children’s day, but slowly I have come to realize that less is more. I do not have to schedule in science experiments (they seem to make their own up as we go), arts and crafts time (they are pretty good at getting into the art supplies and creating their own), or any other extemporaneous activity. Now that their toy selection has been greatly reduced, they have had to come up with their own creative games. I am enjoying watching them come up with these crazy, often hilarious antics. Recently, Caleb has been collecting all the spiders in our house as his “pets”. Though he’s upset that he only gets to keep them in his jar for a short period of time before he must release them outdoors (sorry, I just don’t do spiders), he has a greater interest to learn about them. They also have been reading about knights lately, so Isaiah made up a new drama:)

What I do include in our daily routine is: math, writing, and reading. Spelling and vocabulary are worked in most days (those only take 10-15 minutes). Mostly though the children work on their own and are self-directed. They come to me for help if needed, but I encourage them to look it up as best they can. The little ones help me throughout the day with the daily chores (even Nathaniel can fold cloth napkins and hand towels :) ). It makes my load a lot lighter. I have often heard that one of my jobs as a mother is to train myself out of a job. This has become a necessity as of late, since I am so busy nursing and rocking little Michael.

So, though we might not have lots of extra-curricular activities and various lessons and clubs to run off to, I am learning to be content spending so much concentrated time with my children at home. Exploring and lots of reading each day with one another. Learning that living with the ones God has entrusted to me does not have to be lived at the speed of light, but just simply one moment at a time.

  1. Looks like they are having a blast! I’m a new homeschooler, so thank you for the tips! :D

  2. I keep things pretty simple too. We do MOH together which can include some art & science. I started to do group reading again to go w/it. I use World Wisely 3000, Easy Grammar/Writing & Saxon Math w/cd. B/c they want horses I found a stable that will let them work for their lessons & a bible study. That is once a week. Not much chasing. Being we go to church there is always singing there. They get creative on their own.
