Etsy Spotlight - Green Trike Press
Hi! My name is Kirstin Demer and I am the owner of greentrikepress.etsy.com. I have always had a love of books, stationary, journals…pretty much everything paper related! I just finished up my MFA from Columbia College Chicago in Interdisciplinary Arts. (The degree entailed everything related to bookbinding, papermaking, and letterpress.) I started green trike press on etsy as a venue to sell my journals. I had heard about etsy a few years ago and after much chatter about the website and actually seeing a beautiful pair of earrings a friend had bought…I decided I’d give it a shot! I’m so glad I did. I have met the most amazing artists through the website and the most spectacular customers ever! The name green trike press comes from one of my first watercolors when I was little and it’s actually still hanging in my parent’s house! I have always been involved in the arts in some way or another. Whether traveling around America with an art museum on a train or working as a papermaker in a small studio – I am always making and doing something related to the arts!
I create all kinds of journals ranging from hardcover to leather bound books to itsy bitsy books. I love all of the steps that go into creating a book from scratch. I love preparing all of the pages, sewing the book, finding just the right paper or leather for the covers and finishing them off with the perfect vintage button! I enjoy scavenging through thrift stores and finding old leather from worn coats and giving them a new life in the form of a journal.
People often ask: Why do you make blank journals? What should I write in it?
I love the idea of writing down your thoughts and stories onto the pages of a journal. It’s a wonderful way to clear your thoughts and keep the memories for another time. My journals are to record your history, your present, your future. I love the tactile feel of the journal - of the pages - of the ink to the paper. We all are made up of stories and it is exciting for me to create personal journals which hold these stories.
One of my favorite quotes is by Oscar Wilde:
- “I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read in the train. - Oscar Wilde
I am so happy to be in the Etsy Spotlight and please enjoy my shop! Thanks!
