Day 7 in Kristen’s Kitchen

Welcome to Day 7 in Kristen’s Kitchen. You can read more about Kristen at her blog, The Unsinkable Kristen Chapman.

Day 7

Every Saturday morning we do the same thing.  Way earlier than we’d like, the kids come running into our room and leap into bed with us and demand “Snuggle!  Snuggle!”.  We let the kids under the covers and we snuggle and we tickle and we turn on the cartoons for the kids and we try to eek out a few precious more minutes of sleep before Spiderman is over.  Much sooner than that, Dave and I realize that the day is beginning whether we’re ready or not and we hop out of bed and get the coffee started.  The kids know they’ve won, because they what is coming next - Donuts.

We have a great locally owned donut store right near us and we go there every Saturday morning for breakfast.  We all get the same thing, Dave gets an eclair (and depending on how hungry he is he also gets a glazed twist), I get a sour cream donut, and the kids get donut holes with various glazes.  It never costs more than three bucks and we get to sit in the store and hang out as a family and munch on things I can’t recreate at home.  Delightful.  They also have toys in the corner, and when the kids are finished they go over and play while Dave and I discuss what the plan for the day is.  Today’s plan included a trip to Old Navy, a visit to my Mom’s aunt to pick up a 100 year old rocking chair and some vintage aprons (way cool!), and then a trip to see my Mom and her husband about three hours south of us.  So, we loaded up the kids, took them home, packed, and were on out merry way.

I’ll just skip right on over lunch because it was Wendy’s and really boring and not that good.  All this cooking must be making my taste buds all elitest, because Wendy’s just doesn’t hold the sway it once did.  I’m just not feeling limp fries and stringy burgers.  I know, I know I shouldn’t be hating on Dave Thomas’s lovely food chain, but seriously.  It was not good.

But dinner was a whole nother story.

Mom made a fantastic broccoli/cauliflower salad where she chopped up some heads of broccoli, cauliflower, green onions, and shredded carrots, and then coated them in some mayo, parmasean cheese and sugar.  And topped with bacon bits.  Everything is better with bacon bits.  Tim made burgers and then my Mom ended the evening with the most incredible chocolate cake I’ve ever tasted.  Ever.  And so, I end yet another trip to my mom’s with a fantastic recipe to bring home.  I’m pretty sure that I will be having this cake for breakfast and maybe if I wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom I’ll have a slice then, too.  It’s just that good.  I am also just that addicted to chocolate.

And so ends your week in my kitchen.  I know, what better way to end my weekin the kitchen than with a day where I spent literally no time in there at all.  Donuts, Wendy’s, Mom’s cooking - maybe that’s just what I needed after cooking so much!  After all, babysteps, babysteps friends. Thank you Happy To Be At Home for having me this week and thanks for reading about a novice cook blundering her way through a week in the kitchen and not laughing too hard when I defaulted to leftovers and fast food.  You are the greatest - don’t be a stranger!

Thank you for opening your kitchen to us all this week Kristen.
