Day 4 in Alisa’s Kitchen: BBQ Central

Welcome to the fourth day in Alisa’s kitchen. It’s been such a delight taking a peek into her kitchen this week. Alisa has been working on getting her kitchen “on track,” and she’s been having a lot of fun in the process. We hope you’ve been enjoying spending this week with Alisa.

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful 4th of July. We certainly did here. My day in the kitchen was uneventful, which is just the way I like it. We started out with our hodge podge breakfasts and lots of fruits. We are definitely summer fruit people here. It is hard to keep the kitchen well stocked during this time of year.

We all nibbled for lunch, knowing that we were going to pig out come BBQ time. I was still putting the finishing touches on the cake and cupcakes. I then put the potato salad together with lots of help from The Kids. The Girl’s toe is already doing a lot better and she was able to participate in more of the festivities than we thought she would. That is one of the wonderful things about kids, they bounce back quickly.

Our guests began to arrive just as we finished setting up. I sat down with some ice tea and pretended like I’d been waiting all day for them to just show up a la Martha Stewart. I think they knew better though. They are such good guests, that they showed up bearing delicious bruschetta because I had mentioned earlier in the week how I love me some bruschetta. They also brought the most delicious and simple green salad I’ve ever eaten. It was baby greens, tomatoes, red onion, and feta cheese, the dressing was homemade and to die for. I’m going to nag her until she gives me the recipe.

All of The Kids ran around like unsupervised maniacs while we adults snacked on the salsa The Dad had grilled up Thursday. I ate bruschetta pretty much all day and whined like a baby when it ran out. When All of The Kids began to show signs of real hunger (like gnawing one another’s arms off, that’s fairly obvious), The Dad lit up the BBQ and got to work.

The Dad had cooked up a Plum BBQ sauce that turned out perfectly on the chicken, we dished up old fashioned potato salad, the green salad, and valiantly tried to save room for dessert. All of The Kids refused to eat chicken, so The Dad threw some of our trusty Jenni O Turkey Dogs on the grill and All of The Kids were happy. Except The Girl, but since we weren’t watching what she ate, I’m fairly sure she didn’t touch any meat at all. We then realized it was time to head out to see the fireworks. We did a quick kitchen clean up to keep The Dog from enjoying our bounty while we were away. It was decided to pack up dessert, except for the ice creams. and head on over to the mall.

We settled All of The Kids into the back of The Dad’s pick up and once they calmed themselves down, we fed them more sugar. With sugar on top of it. Noble Pig’s FireCracker Cupcakes were a huge hit. The 4th of July cake wasn’t turned down either. I have to say that the actual cake itself has become my new favorite cake recipe. Just knowing that it is sitting in the refrigerator right now is driving me bonkers! I didn’t manage a picture of the cake, but it looked just like Ree’s, oh yes it did. Maybe, a little better even. Well, except when I went to purchase raspberries at the store, they were so very expensive, mostly rotten, and they didn’t have enough. So I used the rest of our Farmer’s Market Strawberries, which is just as delicious. Yes, it is.

As we parted ways after the fireworks, we all lamented the fact that the ice creams were still in the freezer and after our friends had to read all about us making it this week, they begged to come back over today. I declined them because my house is a mess now thanks to all those kids, but I did so graciously invite my family over to their house this afternoon. We will all pig out on leftovers and pretend like it’s a holiday all over again, because everybody knows that desserts eaten on holidays don’t count.

Make sure you stop in throughout the rest of this week to see what other adventures Alisa is up to in her kitchen. And don’t forget to stop by her personal blog, We Do Things. Thank you for your willingness to open your kitchen to us all, Alisa. It is going to be an interesting, humorous, and enlightening week!
