Day 1 in Amy’s Kitchen

Welcome to Day 1 in Amy’s kitchen. Amy has been very adventurous in her kitchen lately, trying out new things and getting reacquainted with some old favorites. We are very excited to see and share a week in her kitchen. We hope you enjoy this week in her kitchen.

Welcome to my home and kitchen!

I must confess I’m a little intimidated to have you here. All the other moms’ stories have been so delicious! So, welcome to my real world. I will confess that I don’t run the most frugal kitchen. And I’m just beginning to venture into serious meal prep. I bought a breadmaker 2 weeks ago and I’m having a blast discovering all sorts of treasures right in my kitchen that I had not been putting to good use. So, hang in there with me if you will.. it could be an interesting week!

Fortunately we built our house from the ground up several years ago, so I was able to design our kitchen’s layout.

Two of my favorite things about our layout is the raised dishwasher (don’t have to lean WAY down) and the appliance garage which stores my new breadmaker, toaster and the blender, keeping them close at hand without cluttering the counters.

Okay there’s another thing: I love that my sink faces out toward our eating area so I can visit with friends and family while I do the dishes. And I love the raised counter we use to serve food at almost every party we host.

And about those parties…

Today I hosted some girlfriends over for a little clothing party/ trunkshow for another sister-of-law in mine who lives in Dallas. I wanted to offer nibbles for the party, but didn’t want to go too crazy with the food for two reasons:

  1. I just re-joined Weight Watchers (more on my blog if you care to read)
  2. I’m hosting apx 30 kiddos and their families tomorrow to celebrate my son’s 7th birthday.

So I offered my friends some girly martinis (blue raspberry or chocolate mint) and lots of cut vegetables and hummus. I liked knowing I could snack on the veggies all day long without counting one WW point. Cha-Ching!

And here’s a tip my darling husband shared with me today when I noticed I didn’t have enough martini-rimming sugar: the colored sugar you use for decorating cookies works beautifully, too. (Guess it pays to be married to a man who was once a bartender!)

During the shin-dig, while I was visiting with friends, I was also cooking dinner:

Inside my new/ re-discovered kitchen friend was a beautiful pork roast, joined by ¼ cup of honey, a bottle of bbq sauce and about ½ cup of chopped onion. (I know this wasn’t the most frugal choice, as I must confess my onion was bought pre-chopped.)

Before dinner as served, we offered the leftover cut veggies from the party to the kids as appetizers (and they snapped them up!) and then served the pork with rice pilaf. As we were sitting down, I decided to take the raw broccoli and microwave it a bit.

Earlier in the post I probably should have shared our breakfast and lunch items.

Nothing too exciting there: cereal combos (We let the kids pick up to 3 flavors of cereal at one time) and yogurt for the kids, Fiber One Raisin Bran with sliced banana for me.

At lunch my husband was out running errands with our youngest, so I fed the boys sandwiches on homemade bread while I enjoyed store-bought shrimp spring rolls.

Before retiring the kitchen for the night I decided to get tomorrow’s breakfast going.  I dumped a few things into the breadmaker, and turned it on to make a Luscious Blueberry Loaf for tomorrow’s breakfast. Then I did the dishes and visited with our extended family. Once the loaf was finished I took it out to cool. It turned out much better than my first attempt from 2 weeks ago!

Okay, time to turn in! See you in the morning.

Make sure you stop in throughout the rest of the week to see what other adventures Amy is up to in her kitchen. And don’t forget to stop by her personal blog, Mom’s Toolbox, for some wonderful biblical encouragement and lots of other goodies. Thank you for your willingness to open your kitchen to us all. We can’t wait to see what you have cooking this week.

If you are interested in participating as a guest blogger for this 3 Moms feature, please leave us a comment or send us an email at 3moms@happytobeathome.net. We are looking for a variety of women willing to open their kitchens for one week to all of our readers. You do not even have to have your own blog in order to participate.

  1. try this in your bread machine: 3 c a/p flour, 2 t yeast, 4 heaping t sugar, 1 t cinnamon, 3 T shortening, 1 c warm water, 1 t salt, 1/2 c raisins….dump it in….set it to sweet bread, light crust…in 2 hrs 50 minutes, oyur kitchen will be mouthwateringly fragrant and you’ll have some delish raisin bread. (my recipe)

  2. oh and by the way, I covet your kitchen! It’s beautiful!

  3. Your kitchen is absolutely beautiful! I love the brick work so much. Having a kitchen like that might give me a reason to spend more time in there :)
