2 Moms, 20 Pounds: Weigh-In Wednesday #9
This is our ninth Weigh-in Wednesday, so here’s the update on our progress this last week. At the end of the post we’d love for you to link up to your own update post about your weight-loss progress. We look forward to cheering you on!
Food
JOY: I may not be in the driver’s seat yet, but I am most definitely back on the wagon. I’ve been pretty good all week about waiting until I’m hungry to eat. Sometimes that might even mean waiting until closer to noon to eat if I don’t wake up hungry. That may not be “officially” the right way to do things, but it has worked for me. I mean, if I’m not hungry at 8 a.m., it doesn’t make sense to me to eat just because it’s breakfast time.
KATE: The past week was a little difficult. My husband has been craving desserts and I feel bad when he has to eat alone. So what else can I do but join him in having a piece of pie? I think I need to spend some time find other dessert options that will be satisfying for him yet not sabotage my efforts. Otherwise I have done pretty good. Still watching portion sizes and eating slowly to get full faster.
Water
JOY: My water intake has improved a little bit, but it’s not where it should be yet. I’m drinking water with most meals and even some in between meals, but it’s just not a habit yet.
KATE: I’m still doing just fine with the water.
Exercise
JOY: No surprise here. I didn’t exercise at all this week. I guess laziness is my middle name…again.
KATE: I finally made it to the Y for the first time! I have a rotating schedule planned out that includes cardio and strength training, plus swimming at least 3 days a week. This is what I know will make a huge difference for me. What I eat won’t matter so much once exercise is a regular part of my routine.
Challenges
JOY: My challenge this week was to make sure I was eating enough protein. I’m a carb lover, and sometimes I’d have oatmeal for breakfast and toast for lunch. One day last week I made a particular point of trying to have a protein-packed dinner, to make sure I got my 60g of protein for they day. So, I made a meat and cheese sandwich and a big glass of milk which totalled about 50g. I figured that since I’d only had oatmeal, 8oz milk, and toast earlier that day, that I had taken in very few protein grams .
But then I added up the protein I’d had in just my oatmeal, 4 slices of toast and 8 oz. of milk earlier that day, and I was very pleasantly surprised that those carb-heavy meals had actually given me 50g of protein! It was a little shocking to me that those foods that are considered carbs were actually providing me with a good proprotion of proteins to carbs based on my daily nutritional needs (about a 1:5 ratio of protein to carbs). O, happy day!
KATE: Dessert was definitely my challenge this week. It would be easier to watch my husband eat something for dessert if it wasn’t my number one weakness. As I said, I’ll have to find a compromise for us.
Successes
JOY: Obviously my success this week was waiting until I was hungry to eat instead of just eating whenever I though about it. Well, that, and not eating a giant dark chocolate bar.
KATE: Actually getting into the Y and setting out long range goals was a huge success!
Plans for the next week
JOY: I’m going to continue to eat less by waiting until I’m hungry. And, of course, I NEED to drink more water and exercise at least a little.
KATE: I’m going to work on turning my new exercise routine into a habit. And I’m going to spend some time looking for new dessert options.
Weigh-in
JOY: I’m very excited to say that I’m down 2.6 pounds from last week. I weighed in this morning at 157.8 which is one pound less than my lowest weigh-in up to this point. WooHoo! I can just imagine how much closer to my goal I’d be now if I hadn’t gained after Blissdom…
KATE: I’m down only 1/2 a pound from last week. My total loss so far is only 5 3/4 pounds. But a little loss is better then none.

Great job ladies!
I have a hard time with the water issue and am trying to make a concerted effort to write down what I eat using SparkPeople to keep track of nutrients, water, etc. Exercise is still an issue, too.
Joy if you need help eating the dark chocolate, send some my way!
Great job! Thanks for allowing me to join in and share my progress each week. It’s very motivating!
It’s great to watch your progress! I have recently taken on the losing weight goal and am excited to say I’ve lost 30 pounds over the last 5 months or so. Lots of water, controlling portions, and only keeping good-for-me foods in the cupboard to snack on or make for dinner. Keep up the good work! I’m excited to see your progress!
