2 Moms, 20 Pounds: Weigh-in Wednesday #3

2moms20pounds 2 Moms, 20 Pounds: Weigh-in Wednesday #2

This is our third Weigh-in Wednesday, so here’s the update on our progress this last week. At the end of the post we’d love for you to link up to your own update post about your weight-loss progress. We look forwards to cheering you on!

Food

JOY: I haven’t been as good at recording my daily intake as I was last week. There have been several times when I’ve forgotten to record one and even two meals. I’ve also been eating a little more often, not waiting until I’m truly hungry. I did get better toward the end of the week and I was able to keep from snacking all day long. It has helped tremendously, however, that we’re completely out of chocolate chips!

KATE: I have been pretty good at maintaining my food log. However, there has been a time or two when I purposely didn’t write something down because it was late at night and I wasn’t too proud of myself. I KNOW that’s not a good excuse and that it’s a bad habit to get started. I’ve committed myself to not doing that anymore.

Water

JOY: I haven’t been recording my daily water intake, but I have been drinking a lot more than usual. I’m still using a regular glass instead of a water bottle, and I find I’m refilling it several times a day. I’d imagine that I’m getting close to 8 glasses of water a day at least.

KATE: My water intake is still doing great. I feel like it has definitely become a routine now. I do still have to convince myself to put the coffee cup down and go get water at certain times, but that’s getting better also.

Exercise

JOY: YES! I’m exercising! I actually exercised over three hours this week on the Wii Fit (and I’m happy to say that I’m ranked number one in most of the games/activities so far — most, but not all…yet.) I’ve actually been having a lot of fun with the Wii Fit and it’s been incredibly easy to stay motivated to exercise with it. There are a few activities that eat my lunch (anything upper body like push-ups are so hard for me to do), but overall I’ve been working hard enough that I’m sweating by the end.

KATE: Okay, I am impressed with Joy’s accomplishment. I wish I could say that I was exercising as much. I am getting more movement worked in to my days though, although I don’t have one set-aside workout time scheduled.  That is a goal for this week.

Challenges

JOY: My biggest challenge this week was snacking. I found myself several times just wanting to eat for the pure enjoyment of eating rather than waiting until I needed to eat. I’ll admit that I gave in a little too much at the beginning of the week, but by the end of the week, I just distracted myself with busyness and I was able to avoid over-indulging.

KATE: There was one day over the weekend when I was having a very busy morning and decided it would be okay if I skipped breakfast. I should know better. By noon, I actually started not feeling well. Obviously my metabolism has quickly gotten used to eating breakfast. As a result of this, I had a bagel with cream cheese less than an hour before lunch.

Successes

JOY: I’ve really surprised myself in my self-control when it comes to drinking milk. Before we started this 2 Moms 20 Pounds challenge, my main drink was milk; I drank it in the with every meal, with snacks, and sometimes on its own. I’m happy to say that we actually had a gallon of milk come within one day of its expiration date — a rare occurrence at our house. I have been making sure I get at least a little milk each day, but that’s usually only with cereal.

My other big success was on Monday night when Jerah, my 9 year old, decided to make brownies. Now, I LOVE brownies, especially right out of the oven — but I didn’t have a single one! And it was surprisingly easier than I thought. What’s really great is that each of these little successes makes it that much easier to say “no” the next time!

KATE: I made bacon waffles one day last week. I love bacon waffles and could easily eat a dozen in one sitting. But I successfully limited myself to 2 waffles and felt extremely satisfied. I’ve also noticed that I’m getting full quicker which has been great in keeping me from over eating.

Plans for the next week

JOY: I need to keep to my goal and eat only when I’m hungry. When I start snacking between meals, I find that it’s hard to stop.

KATE: I need to work in a specific workout time so that I can keep myself accountable. I also need to come up with a few new ideas for my late-night snack so that I’m not tempted by things I know I shouldn’t eat.

Weigh-in

JOY: I realize that a person’s weight can fluctuate up to about 4 pounds from one day to the next, so I wasn’t really surprised that my weight went up and down quite a bit this week; but it was a little disappointing. Last Wednesday I was at 164.4, and by Friday I was down to 162.6, but then it went up again to 165.8 on Sunday. I know I probably wasn’t really gaining weight, but all the same I wasn’t terribly encouraged by it. Thankfully, I weighed in this morning at 163.2, which is a 1.2 pound loss from last week. Hopefully it’ll be even better by next week since I’ve added exercise into my routine. Slowly but surely!

KATE: We finally purchased a scale this week. As of Friday, I have lost 3.5 pounds. I am very happy with this progress and am now looking forward to noticing more of a difference in my clothes.

  2. Great Job Ladies!

Kate - Great job on the 3.5lb loss!

Joy - Get off that scale goofball! I am a scale addict too, so I know its hard. But, seeing a bigger number that ONE day really helps keep me off!

    Keep up the hard work.

    My post is also up.

  3. Great job girls! I can’t wait to see the new slimmer yous at Blissdom!

  4. @Alicia — Another friend just told me the same thing about weighing weekly. But really, there’s a method to my madness. I just told her that I’ve done the weigh-in only once a week thing before and I didn’t like it because if I happened to weigh MORE when I weighed in, I would be disappointed. I actually prefer weighing everyday so I can stay motivated. It encourages me when my weight dips, even if only for a day, and it motivates me to keep on keeping on with what I’m doing. If I weigh MORE on a particular day, I’m just that much more careful about not overeating that day. If I weigh in once a week and it’s more than the last weigh-in, I have a tendency to think that the entire week was a waste and why bother continuing. But that’s just me. I’m weird that way.

I know the experts say don’t weigh every day, but for me I think it works. :)

  5. down to 163, but I feel like if I was really trying I’d be doing better. Thanks for doing this and reminding me to do it, too…Well, your posts remind me that is.

  6. Ladies, Great job on your progress!

Kate, for your late night snacking ideas…do you like cottage cheese? If so, one of my favorite late night snacks is 1/2 cup cottage cheese with either peaches, or applesauce. I have tried it with pineapple too but really didn’t like that combination that well. Something else I like to do is 2 sheets of graham crackers broken in half with peanut butter in the middle. I found too having something with a protein kick to it(like a handful of nuts) instead of a peanut butter & jelly sandwich for my night time snacking has helped those stomach growlies first thing in the morning.

I am still not finding time to exercise either but I have been working at my portion control and snacking and for me that has been half the battle.

  7. Great job on your loss and doing well! :D

  8. You ladies are doing great, and you are a wonderful incentive — something we can all do together! I weighed 153.8 on Monday (my weigh-in day at Weight Watchers); this is a loss of 2.8 lbs for the week and 5.8 lbs since I began my lifestyle change on 1-5-09. I snacked a lot this past week, also, but I tried to snack on low-point (which is also low-calorie and low-fat) foods. Some days I succeeded, some days I didn’t. Good luck to all and happy losing for this next week! Faith in Marshall, TX
